I am Gary Elliott

a family member of someone we've lost to ALS

New York

My sister Carol survived sporadic ALS for 16 years, three months and 19 days.

My sister Carol survived sporadic ALS for 16 years, three months and 19 days. I was her youngest brother who edited all her emails from several states away to let her contacts know about ALS and about how she was doing in her ALS journey. Once Facebook came along, our Living With ALS posts became common on social media.

The Ice Bucket Challenge was an awesome event which skyrocketed the numbers of our Facebook friends in a 6-week journey of its own. Carol died of ALS at age 60 in 2016, but I have remained a forever advocate of ALS. The various Facebook ALS groups I am in puts me in a worldwide community of about 3,000 ALS patients, caregivers and family members like myself. Forever Until a Cure!

Photo: Carol and her caregivers… a brother, a sister (nurse by profession) and mom. Dad was a caregiver until his passing due to age. Mom… she’s still alive well into her 90’s! BTW: This is Carol’s Homecoming 2016… a planned 3-month return adventure to her New York State roots after 30 years of living in Virginia. Picture taken in July 2016. She died six weeks after this photo was taken.
