I am Brad Forsythe

living with ALS

I told myself that I would not let ALS take that tradition away from me.

Several years ago, my friends and I started a tradition where every Labor Day weekend we would travel to a different city to check out a new MLB stadium.

Since many of us live all over the country, it was an easy way to meet w/o too much traveling. And because we all love baseball, it was a great way to take in a game with the excitement of a new ballpark. In addition, we could experience the local flavor of these cities as we would always tack on additional activities such as visiting a local museum or brewery. From renting kayaks at McCovey Cove (Giants) to sitting poolside for a game (Diamondbacks), we’ve built many great experiences and lifelong memories.

Last year, I was diagnosed w/ ALS and our tradition was put on the back burner as I wrestled with the diagnosis and the implications. Not wanting to give up -and not wanting ALS to be in control – I suggested we all chip in and get a suite for the Angels game so I wouldn’t have to travel too far. It turned out to be the most lively year in terms of participation; I think we had 18 people in total!

After that game, I told myself that I would not let ALS take that tradition away from me and I’m now researching the accessibility options at various stadiums. The only thing I’m considering is changing the timing from Labor Day to Lou Gehrig Day.
