I am Nicky Trasviña

a family member of someone we've lost to ALS,
someone who cared for a person we've lost to ALS

California

My dad witnessed the SF Giants win the pennant for the World Series in 2010 and again in 2012. He passed away six months later at the age of 100.

My dad would hand us our gloves to play catch in our big backyard. My favorite part was to catch my dad’s super high fly balls, pushing my little brother out of the way. We also spent countless hours watching the SF Giants play on TV!

But in 2002 our lives were forever changed with my dad’s diagnoses of ALS at the age 90! That’s when Giants baseball became even more important as the glue bonding us together, including my dad’s caretakers.
Almost every game on TV was enjoyed by my dad and brother, or with me and our Latina caretakers who gained a passion for baseball as we explained this new game to them. We would watch the game, like my dad insisted, “til the last out.” My dad witnessed the SF Giants win the pennant for the World Series in 2010 and again in 2012. He passed away six months later at the age of 100.

At his funeral I told the tried and true story about baseball and Heaven. “Dad,” I said, “I have good news and bad news. The good news is that there’s baseball in Heaven, The bad news is you’re pitching tomorrow.” May God bless my Dad and baseball.
