My husband, Ralph Hua, was diagnosed with ALS two years ago at age 40. I am his caregiver and I also am the caregiver for our two kids who are 5 and 10. I know that Ralph has challenges due to ALS everyday and while he is fighting that fight, I fight for everything else.
We’ve had issues with health insurance over medication approval and formula coverage. We also encountered an ADA issue in our town where they had signs up that people needed to ask for a utensil at the grocery store food to go area. This impacted Ralph because he has Bulbar ALS and he was not able to verbally ask for a utensil while also trying to independently check out and carry a to go box of food. We contacted our City Council about the issue and asked them to change the municipal code. After some time, they returned utensils to make it more accessible for everyone.
Some days are hard. I remind myself, “I can do hard things.”
