Autonomy for Disabled Veterans Act

Veterans are two to ten times more likely to be diagnosed with ALS than civilians, with the risk depending on their time and type of service.

The Autonomy for Disabled Veterans Act, H.R. 2245, would increase the maximum amount available for the Home Improvements and Structural Alterations (HISA) grant program for disabled Veterans. The HISA grant program provides financial assistance to Veterans (and service members) for medically necessary home modifications that improve accessibility, such as ramps, widened doorways, or adapted bathrooms. This increase would provide more financial support for veterans to make necessary modifications to their homes to improve accessibility and independence.

The bill does two things:
1. Increases Grant Amounts: The bill raises the maximum HISA grant amount from $6,800 to $10,000 for service-connected disabilities and from $2,000 to $5,000 for non-service-connected disabilities.

2. Inflation Adjustment: The bill also ties the grant amount to the Consumer Price Index, ensuring that the funding keeps pace with inflation and doesn’t become less valuable over time. The grant amount will be assessed annually.

To rectify this injustice, please write to your legislators to request they co-sponsor The Autonomy for Disabled Veterans Act!
