Peer Support
The Peer Mentor program connects those impacted by ALS to one another to share their perspective of living with or caring for someone with ALS, what they found to be helpful, and to provide unique support. Peer Support Specialists are people impacted by ALS who are trained to support others impacted by the disease. They share critical medical and research information, facilitate referrals to financial and insurance assistance resources, provide emotional support, and more. Involvement in this program requires a time commitment of 25+ hours of training and providing support for at least 3 hours each week. Our Peer Support programs are more than just pairing people together—it is its own special, connected community. The bonds between our mentors, mentees, and peer support specialists grows as they move together through challenges and victories, finding purpose and healing with each other. I am in awe of how well matched my mentor and I are. We are able to compare notes and learn tips and tricks to help us try our best to remain independent for as long as we can. We have swapped pictures of our families and life events. Interestingly enough, our backgrounds and beliefs are similar, too. Compliments to the ALS “matchmaker.” My mentor is a 100% success story.
I began mentoring with I AM ALS four years into my sister’s ALS journey as a way to give back to this supportive community. However, it soon became a profound experience of connection and healing. Having personally experienced the paralysis that accompanies the early days of this diagnosis, my goal was to help alleviate this anxiety for others. Little did I know the beautiful impact this would have on my own life.
