CRAB Sailing

Chesapeake Region Adaptive Boating (CRAB) is partnering to make sailboat rides available to I AM ALS Community Summit participants on Saturday, June 1, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. The facility is located at 7040 Bembe Beach Road in Annapolis, Maryland (an hour or longer trip from DC, depending on traffic).

The Chesapeake Region Adaptive Boating Center (ABC) is a beautiful, fully accessible facility. The ABC features a 16-slip floating dock with an 80-foot T-head pier, adaptive boarding equipment for guests ( lifts and transfer slides), an open-air pavilion, and a 2,600 sq. ft learning center with panoramic views of the water.

In conjunction with the I AM ALS Community Summit, CRAB can accommodate up to 18 people (3 per sailboat), but if one individual weighs over 250 lbs., there will only be one additional guest in that boat.

Boats can accommodate 1-2 wheelchair users. For the sailboats, wheelchair users have to leave their wheelchairs on the dock and be transferred into the boats. Those who can hold their weight can use transfer slides, and those who cannot use our Hoyer lifts. There is also a Gemini Power Catamaran, which does accommodate wheelchairs and is potentially available to us depending on the number of commitments to attend.

The sail will begin promptly at 10:00 a.m. Participants must be at the ABC by 9:30 a.m. at the latest to allow for bathroom breaks and a safety briefing.

The deadline to commit is May 22, 2024. Note that if there are weather concerns, CRAB may have to cancel. CRAB will make that call by 3:00 p.m. on May 31, 2024.

Use this form to sign up for the event and please indicate who would like to sail with whom. For more information about CRAB visit www.crabsailing.org
