I am Ken’s Story

Family member of someone living with ALS

Massachusetts

My mother and I are the full time Caregivers of my father, who was diagnosed with Bulbar ALS in 2022. My father is bed bound and has been on a ventilator since October 2023. After a months long hospital stay he has been home with us. I moved in with my parents so that I could provide care. I also was forced to resign from my job as they were not understanding of my situation. I was actually told I needed to choose between my father or my job. Shortly after this happened my father’s care advanced even more and now requires two people at all times, which means I am unable to work anyways. My father is almost fully paralyzed and unable to communicate. Every day is incredibly hard since there is no help available but we are grateful he is still with us. As caregivers we have had to become doctors, nurses, and social workers in addition to our roles as loving family members. My mother and I’s lives have completely stopped in the last year but it’s all worth it to have him. He is our world and hero.
